BNP Paribas fights sex discrimination case

LONDON – City trader Katharina Tofeji is claiming £1.3 million in compensation against BNP Paribas bank, for alleged sexual discrimination.

At a tribunal, Tofeji claimed that when she announced her pregnancy in November 2004, she was treated unfairly by managers and received a hostile reception. Co-workers expressed surprise at her decision to return to work after her maternity leave, and she was refused an application for a four-day working week after returning to work. Bonuses and appraisals also did not reflect her performance, she claims.

Tofeji's solicitors are claiming that working mothers have a right to flexible working arrangements, and that her request for flexible hours should have been approved. The case continues.
