In search of common sense
Last month's ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that insurers could no longer discriminate on the basis of gender was hailed by European Union justice commissioner Viviane Reding as "an important step towards putting the fundamental right of gender equality into practice". Others have viewed it less charitably - "utter madness" and "a setback for common sense" was UK Conservative MEP Sajjad Karim's take on the ruling.
