A long road ahead

Compliance officers are beginning to see the benefits of automation, but they're struggling to get the management buy-in they need to implement programmes effectively. Dianne See Morrison discovers how an enterprise-wide approach to risk management could give them the boost they need

While Tom McEvilly, UK sales director of compliance technology vendor CheckFree, was visiting a potential client recently, the time came to see how the company was handling its Sarbanes-Oxley (Sox) efforts. Out came a heavy cardboard box stuffed with papers, each one representing an exception that needed to be investigated. The box, he was told, would be handed to the Sox team, who would fly in especially to handle it. Tracking was done on nothing more sophisticated than a spreadsheet.
