Thomson Reuters targets benchmark providers with new index business

Thomson Reuters has made a definitive step into the index provider space with the launch of 800 new equity indexes. The company is aiming to compete against incumbent benchmark providers, targeting the likes of Standard & Poor's, Dow Jones and FTSE.

The new indexes will be calculated using a proprietary classification model which stretches across 71,000 public companies and 230,000 private companies.
