Citi, JP Morgan slash $3tn of OTC notionals in Q2

Trimming of cleared portfolios bucks trend across top US banks

Citi and JP Morgan cut a combined $3.02 trillion of cleared derivatives in the second quarter, bucking a wider trend across the eight US systemic banks as the expansion of their derivatives books continued apace.

Risk Quantum understands portfolio compression allowed Citi to shrink the notional amounts of over-the-counter derivatives routed through central counterparties (CCPs) by 4.5% to $30.28 trillion. The same technique may also have been at work at JP Morgan, where cleared notional fell 4
