Carlos Tavares replaces Eddy Wymeersch as chair of Cesr

Spanish regulator to succeed Eddy Wymeersch in August, but might only serve until January, when Cesr becomes Esma.

Members of the Committee of European Securities Regulators (Cesr) today elected Carlos Tavares, chairman of Portuguese securities regulator Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários, as chair. He replaces Eddy Wymeersch, chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Belgian Commission Bancaire, who has chaired Cesr since February 2007.

Tavares will take up the position on August 1, and would ordinarily serve for two years. But in a statement today, Cesr said his term of office could be shorter as
