Exchange-traded derivatives soaring, says BIS

The aggregate turnover of exchange-traded derivatives contracts reached a new record in the fourth quarter of 2001, said the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in its latest quarterly review.

The notional value of derivatives transactions rose by 8% to US$163 trillion, the BIS reported. For 2001 as a whole, the notional value of exchange-traded transactions rose by 54% to US$594 trillion. The BIS described this as a “spectacular increase in turnover”.

One of the most notable developments last year, according to the BIS, was the increase in trading activity on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), where the number of contracts traded rose by 78% to 412 million. The CME replaces the
