Australia banks may need to boost capital ratios by $50bn

Government review into the country's financial system recommends Australia banks increase capital levels to the "top quartile" among internationally active banks

Australian banks could face significant capital increases after a major review of the country's financial system urged wide-ranging changes aimed at improving the resilience of banks.

The Financial System Inquiry 2014, led by former Commonwealth Bank chief executive David Murray, recommended "setting Australian bank capital ratios such that they are unquestionably strong by being in the top quartile of internationally active banks".
