Italian rankings

The Italian insurance sector has so far avoided the major problems that have impacted its European peers, and in Life & Pensions' inaugural Italian insurance rankings, practitioners have voted for two well-known names as the number-one bank and insurer respectively. Aaron woolner reports

Italy has proved to be a relatively sheltered domain for insurance companies, compared with the stormy waters elsewhere in Europe following the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which was counterparty to a large number of index-linked insurance products. Although it was painful, it did not cause any long-term damage.

According to Laura Santori, Italy team leader for Standard & Poor's - which was voted the leading ratings agency by respondents to the rankings poll - the main casualties of the slowdown
