Esma names Tavares vice chair and appoints six board members

New statutory authority for the securities market makes first appointments following its creation on January 1.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma) today appointed Carlos Tavares, chair of the Portuguese Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários, as vice-chairman of its board of supervisors and elected the first six members of its management board.

Based in Brussels, Esma was formally established on January 1 as the successor to the Committee of European Securities Regulators (Cesr), following the adoption of sweeping new European Union supervision legislation last year. Tavares served
