The current protections afforded to whistleblowers in the UK are born of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the inquiries into catastrophes such as the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise ferry and the destruction of the Piper Alpha oil rig, to the financial scandals involving BCCI and Barings Bank. These events revealed employees' fears of highlighting the failings of their employers who, in turn, simply ignored worker concerns and punished those who did speak up.
