NPR brings gloom for US banks

Basel II notice of rulemaking (NPR) responses vary widely on the best approach.

The March 23 deadline for comments on the proposed Basel II notice of rulemaking (NPR) has come and gone, and US banks are still tortured by the prospect of losing international competitiveness, or of being stifled by an overly conservative regulatory framework.

The banks agree with the regulators on one thing – a risk-based capital framework is vital for the future safety of the banks and the economy.
