Bird flu concern rises
– Concern over the potential for an outbreak of a bird flu pandemic had US health secretary Michael Leavitt touring Southeast Asian countries at the beginning of October. The flu has killed more than 60 people in Asia since late 2003, and World Health Organisation experts say that the H5N1 avian influenza is the world's top health threat. Reports in early October of bird flu outbreaks in Turkey and Romania have raised concerns that the disease is spreading to Europe.
