A key trend of 2006 was the return of M&A to the insurance market after a fallow period, as the increasing financial strength of the sector and disillusionment by some banks with the bancassurance model has increased consolidation among the big players. In Europe, the headline event was Europe Axa's purchase of Winterthur from Credit Suisse for EUR7.9 billion, which ended the Swiss bank's disastrous foray into the world of insurance.
