Maltese legal services eyes possible growth opportunities from introduction of AIFM directive in 2013

While the introduction of the EU alternative investment fund managers (AIFM) directive in July 2013 may not be a game changer, it should give a fillip to legal services provision in Malta.

Malta’s lawyers are in a positive mood. Those involved in the financial services sector continue to expand and although there may be a shortage of local expertise, most are confident they will be able to attract high-calibre people to the profession.

The drivers for expansion are mixed. Some point to interest from Swiss-based managers and management companies interested in moving into an EU jurisdiction. Others believe the introduction of the EU’s alternative investment fund managers (AIFM)
