Risk Italia 2003: Banks to increasingly use securitisation for risk management

The securitisation market may be increasingly used in the future to manage the risk position of banks, said Marc Zanelli, head of the securitisation group at CSFB in Milan, speaking today at Risk’s inaugural Risk Italia conference, also in Milan.

The securitisation market has exploded in Europe, with the UK and Italy the two largest markets respectively. Most European banks have securitisation programmes, but Zanelli predicts that increasingly securitisation will see further development within risk management.

“Securitisation is currently a strategic financial instrument, but it is very flexible,” said Zanelli. “The spreads are very stable and this is important for risk management – in the case of banks investing in such securitisation
