The Western Area Power Administration will use borrowing authority under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help build the $213 million Montana-Alberta Tie Limited (MATL) transmission project between Great Falls, Montana, and Lethbridge, Alberta in Canada.

The main focus for the Department of Energy (DOE) is job creation, however the 230-kilovolt transmission project will be capable of delivering 300–600 megawatts of wind energy as early as 2010 – enough power for 150,000 to 300,000
