EDF meeting record French power demand

French utility EDF has brought "almost all" of its available generation capacity online to cope with record power demand highs driven by freezing temperatures, the company said today.

EDF's domestic nuclear, hydro and thermal generation plants were brought into service to cope with demand highs of around 90,00MW on Monday, with similar consumption levels predicted today and on Wednesday as lower than average temperatures continue.

EDF said it is well-placed to meet the demand peaks thanks to higher than average hydroelectric reservoir levels and the availability of two new power stations brought online during 2008, which can respond to demand peaks due to their 20 minute start
