Chronic underinvestment in the transmission grid during and after deregulation of the power markets in the 1990s has left the power sector lacking the necessary tools to build a more diverse generation portfolio. But there has been strong political support for boosting renewable energy use in the US in recent years, such as the US Department of Energy’s drive to increase wind power to at least 20% of electricity supply by 2030.
