Volumes Soar at Asian Commodities Exchanges

Volumes on many Asian commodity exchanges soared last year despite the impact of the financial crisis on their US and European counterparts. With strong Asian commodity demand forecast, Katie Holliday looks at the outlook for Asian exchange trading

Over the next few years demand for commodities from Asia is expected to grow at a greater rate than anywhere else in the world. Global oil demand is expected to grow 6%, from 83.8 million barrels/day (b/d) in 2009 to 89.1 million b/d in 2014, with Asian demand forecast to grow at 10% from 25.5 million b/d to 28.1 b/d, according to data from IHS CERA. This unprecedented growth is expected to provide increased opportunities for trading and exchanges in the region.
