Hong Kong to get volatility index ‘early next year’

Hong Kong will get a real-time VIX index in the first quarter next year, according to Hang Seng Indexes.

Hang Seng Indexes (HSI) plans to launch Hong Kong's first volatility index, the HSI Volatility Index, in the first quarter of 2011. The index, comparable to the VIX index in the US, would be the first of its kind in Asia-Pacific, according to HSI. It is being launched by HSI in conjunction with Standard and Poor's (S&P).

Until recently, volatility indexes were the preserve of the US and European markets, although in the past few months indexes have been launched in both Canada and Australia –
