The unravelling of the structured finance markets over the past couple of years has exposed the failings of the world's leading credit rating agencies, disclosed deep failings in financial risk management and thrown the world into recession. Rating agencies played a valuable role in the credit markets, however now it seems their reputations are in tatters.

While the rating agencies have made hesitant steps towards reform, progress has been slow, and touched by moments of complete misjudgement
