Masaaki Shirakawa, governor of the Bank of Japan, has succeeded Hans Tietmayer as vice-chairman of the Bank for International Settlements, a position he will hold until January 2014. Shirakawa is currently chairman of the BIS Consultative Council and has been a member of the BIS board since May 2008. In April 2008, he was named as governor of the Bank of Japan. Tietmayer had been BIS vice-chairman since June 2003. Before that, he was president of the Bundesbank.
