One broker or two?

The benefit of going for more than one prime broker may well outweigh the additional costs incurred

Finding a prime broker can be one of the most difficult decisions for a hedge fund and the decision to bring one or two more to complement the initial relationship can prove profitable for the portfolio and investors alike.

Pascal Lambert, senior managing director and head of European global clearing services at Bear Stearns, says it may not make as much sense, dependent on the underlying strategy, to diversify to more than one prime broker if you have less than $100m under management.
