Basel Committee appoints Australian regulator as next secretary-general

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has appointed Wayne Byres as its next secretary-general. Byres takes over from Stefan Walter, who has served in the role since mid-2006 and will leave at the end of October.

Byres will also assume the chairmanship of the Basel Committee's policy development group. A spokesperson for the Bank for International Settlements says no start date had been agreed, but Byres is expected to take up his position before the end of the year. Walter has yet to
