Hans-Ulrich Doerig, chairman of Credit Suisse, said the appointment will further strengthen the bank's management team in the Asia Pacific, a key growth region for the Swiss banking group. Credit Suisse has appointed Osama Abbasi to take over as chief executive of the Asia-Pacific region from Kai Nargolwala, who will become the bank's chairman of Asia Pacific, a newly created role. Both appointments will be effective on October 1. Abbasi, currently head of the equities department of the investment bank in Asia Pacific, will join the group's executive board. He will be responsible for executing the bank's strategy in Asia Pacific along with divisional and country performance in the region. Abbasi will remain in Hong Kong and report to Brady Dougan, chief executive of Credit Suisse. Abbasi joined Credit Suisse Financial Products, the former derivatives subsidiary of Credit Suisse First Boston, in 1996 from Bankers Trust. He was previously head of European securities structured derivatives and fixed income sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Nargolwala will relocate to Singapore from Hong Kong to become non-executive chairman of Credit Suisse Asia Pacific. He will provide counsel and guidance to senior management in the region, including the newly appointed chief executive, with a focus on strategy and senior client relationships. He will also report to Zurich-based Dougan. Nargolwala joined Credit Suisse in 2008 as Asia Pacific chief executive, where he was responsible for all of activities in the region including the private banking, investment banking and asset management businesses. Nargolwala worked at Standard Chartered Bank from 1998 and was responsible for governance in Asia and the group's global risk and special assets management functions. He was appointed to the emerging market bank's board in 1999. Prior to Standard Chartered, he worked for Bank of America for 19 years in Europe, the US and Asia, including working as group executive vice-president and head of the Asia wholesale banking, headquartered in Hong Kong.
