The Australian financial system has weathered the global financial crisis remarkably well. Its four major banks are among the few worldwide to have retained their AA ratings, and its prudential supervisory authority is enjoying worldwide acclaim for its pragmatic management in the run-up to the crisis.

That is good news for John Laker, who has been actively involved in the organisation’s policy design since inception, and has headed the organisation as executive chairman since 2003.
