Hubertus Bardt

Dr. rer. pol. Hubertus Bardt is Head of the Research Department and Member of the Management Board at the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln (Cologne Institute for Economic Research). Visiting lecturer at the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. He studied economics and business administration in Marburg and Hagen and received his doctorate in economics from the Philipps University Marburg. As former Head of the Research Unit Environment, Energy, Resources, he has published numerous papers on energy, climate and resources policies.

Iliana Ilieva

Iliana Ilieva is an industrial PhD candidate at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and is currently employed for a research project by Brady Energy Norway AS - a company supplying process and risk management software solutions for commodity and energy trading companies. Iliana has a B.S. in economics from Sofia University (Bulgaria) and a M.S. in economics, with focus on energy economics, from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, School of Economics and Business. Before the start of the PhD program Iliana Ilieva has been working for the Norwegian Center of Expertise - Smart Energy Markets, and Inkubator Halden, contributing for two large scale research projects: "Manage Smart in Smart Grid" and IMPROSUME. Throughout the course of her PhD study Iliana has spent time as a research visitor at the University of Maryland. Besides the topic of electricity retail competition Iliana's PhD work has been focusing on the market effects of increased demand flexibility and the balancing power market. Iliana's main research interests are related to electricity market integration, demand response and the development of smart grid.

Steven A. Gabriel

Dr. Steven A. Gabriel is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering as well as in the Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Scientific Computation Program at the University of Maryland-College Park (UMCP). Professor Gabriel has over 70 publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports including most recently the lead author on the book Complementarity Modeling In Energy Markets (Springer, 2013) (authors: S.A. Gabriel, A.J. Conejo, B.F. Hobbs, D. Fuller, C. Ruiz) Springer, 2013. He has been an expert panelist for the DOE (Energy Information Administration and National Technology Laboratory) in providing guidance on building an international natural gas model as well as evaluation of their fossil energy programs. Dr. Gabriel has an M.S. in Operations Research from Stanford University (1984), and an M.A. (1989) and Ph.D. (1992) in Mathematical Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining the University of Maryland in 2000, he was a project manager for energy modeling at ICF Consulting, a postdoctoral researcher at Argonne National Laboratory, an Operations Research Analyst at Arthur D. Little, Inc., a Systems Analyst with Technology Systems, and a Market Analyst for Kero-Sun, a kerosene heater company.
