European ETDs make scattershot progress in 2017

Almost half of equity derivative notionals executed on exchange

Exchange-traded derivatives (ETD) met with varying success in the European market in 2017, making in-roads in certain asset classes but struggling to break into others, a report published by the European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma) shows.

ETDs' share of EU derivatives notionals advanced to 17% from 13% over the course of 2017, representing €112 trillion of the €660 trillion total. The remainder were traded over-the-counter.
