State bank supervisors had demanded the standardised approach

The standardised approach was being requested by industry and state regulators long before four of the biggest banks went to Congress requesting its inclusion in the NPR.

The recent shift by US regulators to include the standardised approach is a move welcomed by both US banks and many state banking regulators. A series of letters and meeting notes has uncovered industry and supervisory discomfort with many issues surrounding Basel II implementation in the US, including the use of the advanced approaches for operational and credit risk.

Recent headlines have concentrated on a meeting between the Fed and Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase, Wachovia and Washington Mutual
