In October, Chris Giancarlo, a member of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), left behind his well-appointed office in Washington, DC, to visit rural Indiana and Kentucky. During the trip, he donned a helmet to go deep underground in a coal mine, toured an aluminium smelter and a grain elevator, and chatted with about a dozen family farmers over a hearty lunch of pulled pork sandwiches and apple pie.
