Nigel Wilson, the chief executive of Legal & General, urged insurers to rediscover their social and economic purpose and not be sidetracked by the burden of regulation.

Speaking at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries Life Conference in Birmingham on November 9, Wilson challenged the actuarial profession to look beyond regulatory compliance and lead the insurance industry in the creation of new health and income-protection products to help plug the growing welfare gap in the UK.
