Regulators seem determined to push for central clearing of standardised over-the-counter derivatives contracts across all asset classes. Legislation is currently working its way through the US Congress, while the European Commission (EC) has detailed the policy actions it intends to take in 2010. Central clearing and exchange trading form central planks of both sets of rules.

Dealers in the foreign exchange market are already working to prepare the ground for the new regime, and are co-operating
