Market snapshot: Barclays returns to the US top three

Notional issuance in the US in May was higher than a year ago and Barclays has resumed its position in the top-three issuers, though it is a long way behind Bank of America in terms of issuance. Tim Mortimer reviews the monthly product and producer issuance in the US and the UK

Capital-at-risk leveraged return notes were the most popular products by notional in the US in May. These notes allow leveraged participation in the underlying asset (usually up to a cap) while risking a loss to capital, and accounted for just over two-thirds of public issuance registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for the month. Digital products were the second most popular products, making up more than 12% of notional. Digitals usually pay a fixed return if the underlying
