In a deal last year for Dutch insurer Aegon, Societe Generale (SG) sold a group of investors on the promise of potential double-digit annual returns, brought capital relief to its client and helped pension funds meet their obligations to individuals who are living longer than ever.

Having acquired exposure to a portfolio of longevity risk, Aegon, which is based in The Hague, sought to offload that risk and sent out request-for-proposals to about 15 banks to structure the deal. The request itself
