The extent to which speculative money is inflating commodity prices is the subject of ongoing debate, but for risk managers there are more subtle nuances to digest – such as the influence of investor behaviour on markets and the impact of concentrated long-only buying on the shape of the forward curve in certain markets.

Commodity assets under management (AUM) passed the $400 billion mark in the first quarter of this year and now stand at around $412 billion, according to figures from Barclays
