Even since the current global credit crunch gathered steam, big acquisitions have been made in the water sector. Last October saw highly competitive bidding for Southern Water in the UK, for example, with the company eventually sold for £4.2 billion to a consortium comprising JP Morgan, UBS and the Challenger Infrastructure Fund of Australia.

Pension funds have also continued to move into the sector, attracted by the low correlation to traditional financial assets and the stable long-term
