The UK's Serious Fraud Office (SFO), responsible for prosecuting individual and corporate instigators of major frauds (in excess of £1 million) and offshore corruption, did not have the easiest time of it in 2008.

The office saw the collapse of some of its largest and most expensive cases and a continuing dispute over its decision to stop a bribery investigation involving arms manufacturer BAE Systems and the Saudi royal family. Additionally, a damning report by former New York prosecutor
