Commissioner says agency will police risk “wherever it occurs”

A US regulator has dismissed industry calls to limit the application of its clearing, trading and reporting rules to trades involving US persons.

“We need to follow the market risk wherever it occurs,” said Sharon Bowen, a commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). “We don’t want to create any regulatory arbitrage so people can decide they would rather trade here rather than there, and we want to make sure there is a level playing field globally."
