Lukken leaves CFTC for NYSE Euronext
Walter Lukken, a commissioner and former chairman of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will leave the regulator on July 10.
Lukken has been a commissioner since August 2002, and served as acting chairman between June 2007 and January 2009. He will join NYSE Euronext in the newly created role of senior vice-president of global market structure, in the office of its general counsel. He will be based in New York.In his time at the CFTC, Lukken was the first chairman of the Energy Markets Advisory Committee, which was created in February 2008 to advise the Commission on regulatory issues in commodity futures markets. The CFTC set up the committee, which consists of 25 representatives of major investment banks, energy producers and consumers, after a reported surge in energy market manipulation.
From October 2003 to January 2008, Lukken also served as chairman of the CFTC's Global Markets Advisory Committee, which was set up in 1998 to advise the Commission on issues affecting the integrity and competitiveness of US markets and US firms engaged in global business.
Prior to joining the CFTC, Lukken served for five years as counsel on the US Senate Agriculture Committee, working under chairman Richard Lugar, specialising in futures and derivatives markets.
