The disappearance of two of Wall Street's biggest investment banks over a single weekend in September makes the latest recommendations of the Counterparty Risk Management Policy Group (CRMPG III1) suddenly seem less like long-term objectives and more like urgent and essential requirements.

In particular, the August report calls for banks to ensure their credit systems are capable of compiling "on an ad hoc basis and within a matter of hours, detailed and accurate estimates of market and credit
