Mittelstand to diversify funding

The backbone of the German economy, small and medium-sized enterprises – the Mittelstand – are on the search for alternative funding sources as banks begin to cut back their exposure and the equity markets provide lacklustre alternatives.

Investment banks have started to reduce their relationship lending activities with the Mittelstand after suffering credit losses. As securitisation technology provider Demica indicates, the average cost of bank finance for German companies has risen by 12.5%
