The Dow Chemical Company, the largest chemical firm in the US and the second largest in the world, has a noted advantage over other US-based chemical companies insofar as it has a presence in the Middle East, and is thus somewhat insulated from fluctuations in natural gas prices.

Yet the extent of its litigation liability is still a factor that is not fully known. Dow Chemical recognizes $1.9 billion of asbestos liabilities, but some in the market wonder if that is an overly optimistic
