ASX to launch coal and power futures

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) is to list thermal coal futures and options on April 21. It will also launch New Zealand electricity futures on 28 April and natural gas futures contracts for the state of Victoria on 5 May.

The products are the first tranche in a suite of new energy and environmental products that ASX is hoping to launch. Other planned contracts include Renewable Energy Certificate futures and options; Australian Emissions Unit futures and options (pending the passage of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme legislation); and Australian dollar-denominated Certified Emission Reduction futures and options.
